June Ferreira Rezende · biologist · researcher · artificial intelligence and technology · São Paulo, Brazil
I am a biologist completing a BSc at the University of São Paulo (2026) and an evolutionary ecology researcher. I study phenotypes under natural selection — chromosomal inversions and desiccation tolerance in Drosophila along the South American latitudinal cline — and I do it with the same method I use for everything: observe, register, repeat, verify.
Outside the bench I build my own AI infrastructure with open-weight models. I assembled my first computer at fifteen, self-taught, and never stopped learning by taking things apart. Today I run agents and local models on my own machine, write the procedures they execute, and document everything so that another person — or another agent — can reproduce it.
I took the course “AI, Digital Sovereignty and Technological Autonomy” at Código Não Binário, a Brazilian NGO for LGBTQIA+ technologies and algorithmic justice, and that is what brought me into this field: I understood that sovereignty over your own tools is a political question, not a technical one.
I teach biology and coordinate the science curriculum in a free pre-university course for low-income LGBTQIAPN+ students, and that is where my interest in technology that reaches the people who need it comes from.

BSc in Biological Sciences — University of São Paulo (USP) · 2022–2026
MSc in Ecology (PPGE/IB-USP) — selection in progress, entrance exam in October 2026. Planned project in bioinformatics: computational analysis of genomic and ecological data.
Poster — “The influence of the endosymbiont Wolbachia on desiccation tolerance in South American populations of Drosophila melanogaster” · II Brazilian Congress of Evolutionary Biology (SBBE), Belo Horizonte, 16 July 2026 · co-authors: Prof. Rodrigo Cogni, Prof. Tiago Ribeiro
Co-author of a scientific survey — “A BioBlitz Inside the Museum: Exploring Ant Diversity Through Citizen Science” (Santos S, Oliveira CM, Moleiro HP, Matielo DM, Bodani E, Ulysséa MA, Rezende JF, Moreira RR, Camacho GP; Myrmecology meeting, 2025): 374,202 ant specimens, 2,730 species and morphospecies, 890 drawers and more than 60 participants, in the collection of the Museu de Zoologia da USP.
Chromosomal inversions in Drosophila associated with the South American latitudinal cline. Bench work with PCR, DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis, data analysis and visualisation in R, reproducible protocol recording, and co-authorship of three manuscripts in preparation.
Research scholarship (PUB) · Hymenoptera Laboratory, Museu de Zoologia da USP · Jun 2023 – Jul 2024Digitisation of type specimens with focus stacking — high-volume image capture and processing, standardisation of names and metadata in the collection — and support to the screening of entomological material, in the laboratory led by Prof. Gabriela Camacho.
Laboratory of Complex Character Evolution · Dept. of Genetics and Evolutionary Biology, IB-USPPreparation of the master's project in the bioinformatics line: evolutionary ecology, natural selection and computational analysis of genomic and ecological data.
47 courses of my degree organised in an open vault: 4,309 files, 1,125 PDFs, 2,492 notes, 29.5 GB. Built by pipelines I wrote: collection through the official Classroom API and from Moodle (agent-driven browser session), PDF text extraction with OCR fallback, duplicate detection and 717 reading notes (99% of the summarisable material). Local search index with 62,179 excerpts and a scheduled monthly maintenance job.
Skills vault — reusable procedures65 skills in Markdown across 13 categories: reading notes, study plans, item-by-item marked mock exams, questions built from the student's own figures, collection harvesting, OCR, arXiv/NCBI/bioRxiv search, encrypted backups. Every skill is written for two readers: the agent executes it, the person understands it.
Local models and automationLocal inference with Ollama on a 6 GB GPU (model and quantisation choice, context window, performance measurement, comparison against paid APIs). Automation in Python and shell with cron/systemd, Google Workspace APIs with OAuth2, rclone sync, encrypted backups with integrity verification, and a full migration of my environment from Windows to encrypted Linux.
Next step: opening the system to studentsI am packaging the vault, the skills and a one-command installer so any student can run their own copy with free models, on the computer they already own, offline after the first download — designed for the Brazilian reality, where internet, hardware and money are the limit. Scheduled for October 2026.
Since 2023, scholarship holder of the CPOP programme (Ministry of Education). I plan the science syllabus, write the workbooks, problem sets and mock exams, and coordinate the teaching team — for classes of low-income LGBTQIAPN+ students preparing for university entrance.
Co-founder of Coletivo Navalha Okupa · culture and politicsWork at the intersection of culture and politics, in the languages of ballroom, hip-hop and slam. During the 2026 USP statewide strike, the collective articulated the support of Erika Hilton and Neon Cunha and carried out cultural actions during the occupation.
